"Won't there be a faggot on some street corner
unbalancing the future of his new man?"
-Manifesto (I speak for my difference) (1986), by Pedro Lemebel.
We are pleased to announce the open call for the Latin American photography magazine Balam issue No. 9, under the theme of NEW MASCULINITIES. We invite photographers, artists and projects from all over the world to be part of this new issue. On this occasion, the guest editor will be the Dominican artist Oscar 1992.
"Stop being so sissy, you have to be macho!", a father repeats for years to his growing son. Thus, through unquestionable mandates in the "male" bible, many children are raised and oppressed by a battery of hypermasculine stereotypes. These, linked to hegemonic, toxic and -although they do not appear to be- fragile patterns, prefigure and fertilize stagnant representations of bodies and their behaviors, aspects that then feed back and deepen the patriarchal culture.
Balam No. 9 aims to vindicate marginalized masculinities and expose their realities, their struggles, their desires. Likewise, from a queer perspective, it seeks to evidence the role that photographic practice played and plays in the codification, interpretation, experimentation and construction of the masculine in contemporary society.
The new masculinities are not new; ignored, they have always existed. We invite, then, projects that subvert the rules of the normative white male, discuss the power relations that nurture notions of "masculinity" and, above all, redefine the path and acceptance of faggots, queers, trans identities, crossdressers, racialized subjects and the infinite ways of being within the LGBTIQ+ community.
